The Maryland General Assembly top

The Maryland General Assembly meets in Annapolis each year for 90 days to act on more than 2300 bills including the State's annual budget. The 427th Session began January 13, 2010 and adjourned April 12, 2010. The General Assembly has 47 Senators and 141 Delegates elected from 47 districts. Legislative information on this website is updated each night during the Session. For a fee, continuously updated information is available through the Legislative Subscription Service.

Information is also available through the Maryland Manual and Maryland State Government.

"Beginning with the general election to be held in Calvert County in November, 1978, five county commissioners shall be elected by County-wide vote. One shall be a resident of the first election district, one a resident of the second election district, and one a resident of the third election district of the County. Of the remaining candidates, the two receiving the highest number of votes shall be selected. Commissioners who are elected and qualify shall take office the third Tuesday of December following election. Each Commissioner shall hold office for four years or until a successor is elected and qualified (Code 1981,§ 4-102; 1985,ch 715,§ 2.)" See Code of Public Local Laws of Calvert County, Section 2-102.

The Officers of the Board, President and Vice President, are elected each December by a majority vote of the members of the Board.

The Board of County Commissioners meets on Tuesday's beginning at 10:00 a.m. Click here for the 2010 schedule. The meeting is held in the Commissioners’ Hearing Room, 2nd floor of the County Courthouse, 175 Main Street, Prince Frederick, Maryland. The meeting is open to the public and generally lasts the business day. In addition, the Board holds evening meetings when necessary. Time and place of evening meetings are advertised in the local newspapers of Calvert County. An agenda for the weekly meeting is published the Thursday prior to the Tuesday meeting (click here).

Anne Arundel County Government

The Anne Arundel County Government provides its citizens some of the best services and facilities in the nation. The Organizational Chart for the County government will show you the breadth and scope of what is available.

Since 1964, Anne Arundel County, Maryland has had a charter form of government in accordance with State law. It is composed of a legislative branch known as the County Council and an executive branch that is headed by the County Executive.

The County Council, as the legislative branch, adopts ordinances and resolutions, and has all of the County's legislative powers.

The County Executive, oversees the executive branch of the County government that consists of a number of County Agencies and Departments. The executive branch is charged with implementing County law and overseeing the operation of the County government.

Charles County is governed by a board of five County Commissioners who are elected at-large to four-year terms.

The Charles County Commissioners are responsible for:

  • raising the revenues to fund the capital and operating budgets of County departments and agencies;
  • providing for the public health, safety and welfare of the residents of the County;
  • adopting and updating the Land Use Plan and Zoning Ordinance and overseeing the development process;
  • establishing, promulgating and enforcing County rules, regulations, ordinances, policies and procedures;
  • appointing boards, commissions, and task forces to advise them and make recommendations;
  • fulfilling the mission of Charles County government and serving on various board and councils in the County, region and State.

The President presides at meetings and hearings of the Commissioners. The President is the only full time position and may reside anywhere in the County. The other four Commissioners, who each represent a Commissioner District in which they must reside, are part-time.
